ABSTRACT

Spatial information is always related to geographic space. The handling of spatial data usually involves the process of data acquisition, storage analysis and output.  Creation of spatial database in Geographical Information System (GIS) domain has become a very effective tool to aid and facilitate management decision making. This collaborative project was initated for developing a spatial database in GIS domain on a 1 : 50,000 scale to assess and monitor the Protected Area resources in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. A 20 thematic layer database covering the physical, ecological and socio economic parameters has been created. Change detection analysis for monitoring vegetational changes has been carried out for the period 1988, 1994 and 2000. It was found that between 1988 to 2000 while there was no change in the total geographical area, the area of Sal forest and mixed forest decreased by 0.36 % and 1.16 % respectively.  During the same period area under bamboo, grassland, habitation, agriculture and scrubland increased by 0.36 %, 0.22%, 0.33 %, 0.30 %, 0.16% respectively. The total change from 1988 to 2000 amounted to 3.49 %. It was also found that of all landcover classes maximum changes took place in mixed forest near habitation and least in bamboo forest area. There has also been an increase in the overall grassland area in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve which is beneficial for many ungulates species. The result of this study are being used in the preparation of management plan of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.
