ABSTRACT

This study aims at formulating the ecological basis for the management of alpine ecosystem in Khangchendzonga National Park (KNP), Sikkim Himalaya. Major objectives of the study are to (i) assess the past and present livestock management practices and their impact on the alpine landscape, (ii) identify ecologically sensitive habitats and characteristic plant communities in the alpine zone, and (iii) detect recent changes in the alpine vegetation. This presentation deals with first two objectives.

Past and present livestock management practices in the study area were  studied through interviews, herder interaction workshops and public hearings. Preliminary analysis of alpine habitats was done with the help of remotely sensed data and GIS followed by detailed field investigations, habitat surveys and vegetation sampling. The study revealed that there has been a major shift in the number and composition of livestock in the study area during the past 50 years. Plant community composition along the gradients of altitude and intensity of use by domestic livestock as well as wild ungulates are discussed. Based on this a holistic analysis of the sustainability of the pastoral systems is attempted along with conservation management strategies for the alpine zone of KNP in West Sikkim.
