There are 515 existing wildlife sanctuaries in India covering an area of 119,930 km2, which is 3.65% of the geographical area of the country (National Wildlife Database, April. 2011). Another 219 sanctuaries are proposed in the Protected Area Network Report covering an area of 16,669 km2.
