XXX Post-Graduate Diploma Course in Wildlife Management

The officer trainees were taken to Rajaji National Park for an orientation tour between September 26 and 30, 2008. In order to extend the benefit of training programmeto other forest department officers, the following modules were opened for lateral entrants: (i) Restraint and immobilization of wild animals module, November 3-7, 2008; (ii) Visitor use management and interpretive planning in protected areas module,November 17-22, 2008; (iii) Ecodevelopment planning for biodiversity conservation module, January 12-23, 2009; (iv) Environment and social impact assessment module, March 3-7, 2009; and (v) Management planning module, April 1- May 29, 2009. XXIV Certificate Course in Wildlife Management

The Course began on November 1, 2008 for duration of three-month. In all, 13 officer trainees of the rank of Range Forest Officers & equivalent joined the course. The officer trainees undertook the Orientation-cum-Techniques Tour at Rajaji National Park from November 26 to December 5, 2008. The tour was conducted at Rajaji National Park by camping at Chilla Forest Rest House Complex. Contact: gopigv@wii.gov.in

 

Training course for middle level officers in Indian Zoos, Dehradun, October 13–22, 2008. The course had twenty nine participants from twenty nine zoos of the country.  The theme of the course was ‘Animal Keeping in Zoos”. Subjects such as,

The participants were taught about upkeep of various species in zoos.

Population Management, Health Care & Sanitation and Zoo Management were taught. The participants were taken to Malsi Deer Park and Rajaji National Park for field visits. They were taught about upkeep of various species in zoos. On October 20, 2008 a field visit to National Zoological Park, New Delhi; and on the next day, a visit to Sloth Bear Rescue Centre, Agra was organized for the officers. The Central Zoo Authority provided financial support for the course. The Valedictory Function of the course was presided by Shri D.N. Singh, Director, National Zoological Park on October 22, 2008. One-week compulsory training programme for IFS Officers on “Wildlife Management: Issues, Concerns & Practices”,

The participants were exposed to the field implementation of latest wildlife monitoring initiative in Rajaji National Park.

Dehradun, October 13-17, 2008. The training programme organized by WII was sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. The main objectives of the programme were: (i) to sensitize the participants about major current issues of wildlife conservation in India; (ii) to apprise some of the current approaches needed and being adopted for effective wildlife management; and (iii) to share latest experiences of WII in wildlife monitoring and PA management, planning and provide a platform for exchange of experiences from different States. The training programme was attended by 19 participants representing 13 States. The conceptual inputs in different sessions were provided by in-house faculty and a group of experienced outside resource persons. For exposing the participants to the field implementation of latest wildlife monitoring initiative, one-day field visit to the nearby Rajaji National Park was organized. Practical training in India for special Diploma Trainees of the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), Sri Lanka, November 2–16, 2008. The Director General of Wildlife Conservation, Sri Lanka had requested Director, Wildlife Institute of India to organize a two-week practical training for the special Diploma Course. As per their request, the Institute organized a practical training programme for the officer trainees with the objective of exposing the participants to WII Administration and various Protected Areas Management Systems in India. The participants were taken to Rajaji National Park, Corbett Tiger Reserve and Kanha Tiger Reserve for field exposure. In all, there were 17 participants. A field visit to Asan Conservation Reserve was also conducted on November 5, 2008. Contact: anup@wii.gov.in

 

Course on ‘Ecological and economic evaluation approaches for mainstreaming biodiversity in EIA’, Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, November 3-6, 2008. In response to the request received by the Wildlife Institute of India from the Chairman, Environmental Technology and Management Association (ETMA), a Saudi Arabian Section of Air and Waste Management Association of the Government of Saudi Arabia, the course was conducted by WII faculty members. The course aimed to promote the understanding of the inter-dependencies between economic development and biodiversity conservation and the importance of integrating economic valuation approaches for mainstreaming biodiversity in impact assessment for improved decision-making. The course was attended by 17 participants representing EIA experts, environmental engineers, and EIA professionals from Saudi Aramco, King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals and EIA consulting agencies in Saudi Arabia. The course was well received and has stirred a demand for more such courses for building capacity of EIA professionals for mainstreaming biodiversity in EIA. Contact: ar@wii.gov.in

 

Outreach programme for IMA cadets, Dehradun, November 28-29, 2008. This programme was conducted by the Institute at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. The theme of the programme was to provide knowledge to the Cadets on first-hand experience of conservation issues under varied ecological, socio-economic, political and administrative situations in the country and to evince interest in biodiversity conservation issues including wildlife photography. Three external resource persons, Shri Himanshu Malhotra, Dr. Vibhu Prakash of BNHS and reputed film maker Shri Rupin Dang were invited to provide their inputs during the training programme apart from three faculty members of the Institute. Training programme on ‘Wildlife Conservation: Issues and Concerns’ for representatives of Indian Army in the State Boards for Wildlife, at Kanha Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, December 4-6, 2008. Twelve officers of Brigadier rank and three of Colonel rank representing 15 States mainly from the north, east and north-east India , along with Director, Policy (Ecology) from army headquarters attended the course. The course methodology was designed to include lectures by eminent resource persons, panel discussions and field visits to expose the participants to the various aspects of wildlife conservation in India.
